Imagine an RFQ that says only “European plug to C13, black, 1.8 m.” The supplier has a rough idea of the appliance end, but the line does not identify the wall plug, exact sales market, cable requirements, operating environment, or documents expected for review or shipment. A few words appear to be missing; in practice, the finished cord is not yet defined well enough to verify.

The ambiguity sits inside the word “European.” It can describe a target region, but it cannot replace the destination country, wall-end configuration, or project requirements. Compressing those decisions into “European power cord” usually means separating them again during sampling, quotation, or document review.

Fix the destination market before choosing the wall plug

Start with the country or market where the equipment will be sold or used. Confirm the wall plug against that destination and the equipment project documentation rather than deriving it automatically from “EU plug” or “European cord.”

HSC’s current catalogue includes both a European two round pin power cord and a European straight French power cord. The current record for each product lists VDE and ENEC. They provide two distinct wall-end directions for discussion, but neither the catalogue label nor the certification fields select the destination market for the buyer. They also do not establish that every cable, appliance end, or possible combination shares the same document scope.

Put “destination market” and “wall plug” in separate RFQ fields. The first states where the project is going; the second defines the proposed physical configuration. The supplier can then review the specific model, drawing, and document request instead of working from a regional shorthand.

The appliance end remains a separate decision

“Wall plug plus C13” is clearer than “European cord,” but it still leaves installation choices unresolved. The appliance connector body, entry direction, and nearby clearance can change how the cord fits. HSC’s current European 90 C13 C13 record lists VDE and ENEC. It is useful here as evidence that straight-versus-angled geometry and cable exit remain appliance-end decisions, not as a stand-in for every C13 configuration.

When the inlet sits close to a wall, cabinet panel, or guard, include an installation view and critical clearances. State which end is angled, identify the viewing direction, and show where the cable must leave the connector. The connector name should not replace equipment information either. Include relevant nameplate details, an inlet photograph or drawing, and any approved sample or customer specification that the supplier must follow.

Cable, environment, and length do not come from the word “European”

After the two ends are identified, the cable still requires its own inputs. Conductor and jacket requirements should come from the equipment engineering specification or project documents, not from the plug silhouette. Overall length, color, indoor or other environmental conditions, routing, bend space, and service access also belong in the finished-cord review.

Commercial inputs matter as well. Quantity, target timing, packaging, and the documents needed during sampling versus mass production can change what the supplier must confirm before issuing a usable quotation.

A certification name is not a passport for every combination

A VDE or ENEC field in one catalogue record should not be copied into an arbitrary European power cord RFQ. Certification and project documents must be checked against the proposed model, construction, cable, and applicable scope.

VDE’s public information presents its certification marks and attestations in a framework that includes product inspection, manufacturing-facility checks, and ongoing production monitoring. It also maintains dedicated testing and certification information for cables and cords. For a buyer, the useful next step is to ask which documents correspond to the proposed finished cord, which models they cover, and what still requires customer-project confirmation—not to use one mark as shorthand for every possible configuration.

Three RFQ shortcuts that create rework

“EU plug” is treated as the complete wall-end specification. It does not identify the exact destination market or provide enough information to review the physical configuration and project documents.

Only the wall end or appliance end is confirmed. “European plug” and “C13” each describe one part of the finished cord. Cable, length, direction, and environmental conditions remain open.

A certification field from one product record is generalized to a whole category. The field belongs to that record; the proposed model and its document scope still require review.

Put these seven inputs in the RFQ

  1. Destination market: the country, region, or customer project—not simply “Europe.”
  2. Wall plug: configuration name, drawing, or approved sample, including viewing orientation.
  3. Appliance connector: equipment inlet, straight or angled requirement, cable exit, and critical clearance.
  4. Cable requirements: conductor, jacket, and other conditions stated in the engineering specification.
  5. Length and environment: overall length, color, operating conditions, routing, and service space.
  6. Commercial inputs: quantity, target timing, packaging, and sample or mass-production stage.
  7. Document requirements: certification or other records required by the destination market, customer project, and proposed model.

These inputs do not necessarily make the RFQ long. They turn a regional label into a finished combination that procurement, engineering, and the supplier can review together.
