How to Source a Waterproof Power Cord: IP44/IP55 Is Not a Complete Specification
IP44 or IP55 is not a complete waterproof power cord specification. Buyers must also define the market, complete connection, exposure, installation state, cable, and proposed-model documents.

Imagine an RFQ with one line: “IP44 waterproof power cord for outdoor use.” It appears to specify both protection and application, yet the supplier still does not know where the equipment will be sold, which part of the connection needs protection, what water or dust exposure will occur, or whether “IP44” refers to a plug, a properly mated connection, or another enclosure on the equipment.
This is more than one missing parameter. The buyer needs to define a complete connection and its use boundaries—not attach the word “waterproof” to an otherwise ordinary cord specification.
First ask what the IP classification applies to
IEC 60529 is officially titled “Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code),” and its published scope concerns the classification of protection provided by enclosures for electrical equipment. For procurement teams, that scope prompts a practical first question: which exact item and configuration carries the stated IP classification?
An IP statement in project documentation might concern a particular plug enclosure, a connection correctly mated with a specified counterpart, or a complete interface area on the equipment. The phrase “IP44 power cord” alone does not establish that the statement covers the whole finished cord, its mating component, cable entry, and equipment interface. Nor does it show that the same scope applies while the connection is unmated.
The RFQ should therefore ask the supplier to identify the specific model and component covered by the IP statement, whether a designated mating component is required to form the complete connection, and which installation and mating state supports the evaluation or document. Without those details, the IP code is still not an acceptance-ready finished-cord specification.
Replace “outdoor” and “waterproof” with actual exposure
“Outdoor use” could mean occasional splashing, persistent moisture, wind-driven dust, water encountered during cleaning, or routing in a sheltered exterior space. Those conditions are not interchangeable. “Waterproof” is equally broad and should not be expanded automatically to immersion, high-pressure cleaning, chemical cleaning, arbitrary temperatures, or long-term UV exposure.
Instead of asking the supplier to guess, describe where water or dust comes from, how long it is present, the installed orientation of the connection, nearby covers or drainage, and the connection state during cleaning and maintenance. If the project involves special washdown, immersion, UV, chemical, or temperature conditions, list each as a separate requirement to be reviewed against proposed-model documentation.
Operating state is another important boundary. A connection that is correctly mated with its required sealing features should not automatically be treated as equivalent to one that is disconnected, partly engaged, or missing its counterpart. State the mating condition during normal operation, installation, cleaning, and service. This article makes no safety claim for any particular model while energized or unmated.
The same IP44 wording can point to different products

These two entries show why shared IP44 wording does not select the wall end or equipment application for the buyer. “Waterproof” is part of each current catalogue title; it does not, by itself, establish the test configuration, mating state, rating, material, destination-market coverage, or protection of a complete system.
Start with the destination market and equipment use case, then ask the supplier for the drawing, mating-component information, and required documents for the proposed model. Even where catalogue certification fields match, the document scope for one product should not be transferred to another plug, cable, or assembly.
IP55 is not simply a universal upgrade
The catalogue also includes an Ip55 Waterproof Dustproof Switzerland Two Pin Power Cord, whose current record lists VDE and ENEC. It is another relevant catalogue direction, but the IP55 wording alone does not make it a universal substitute or across-the-board upgrade for an IP44 option.
The destination market, wall-end configuration, complete connection, installation, and document coverage may all differ. The useful comparison is whether proposed models meet the same application inputs—not a ranking of two codes after separating them from the item and conditions they describe.
Cable and installation conditions remain separate inputs
Even after the protection scope at the connection is clear, the cable has its own requirements. State the length, routing, bend and restraint locations, and the conductor, jacket, and environmental requirements taken from the equipment engineering specification or project documents. Do not derive cable construction, ratings, weather resistance, or chemical resistance from a product title or plug appearance.
The installation view matters as well. Plug or connector orientation, cable exit, nearby covers, potential water accumulation, drainage paths, and stress points all affect how a supplier interprets the application. An equipment-interface photograph, installation view, critical clearances, and the designated mating component are usually more useful than adding another “weatherproof” label.
Service conditions belong in the RFQ too: whether the connection will be disconnected regularly, who checks the seal or mating state, whether equipment is shut down before cleaning, and which instructions the customer expects to review. These questions do not replace standards or certification decisions. They put the proposed product and real operating conditions on the same review checklist.
Three shortcuts that create the wrong conclusion
Only an IP code is supplied. IP44 or IP55 does not identify the destination market, connection design, protected item, mating state, or actual exposure, so it cannot define the finished product on its own.
A component statement is extended to the full assembly. Protection information for one enclosure or connection state should not be extended to the cable entry, mating component, complete cord, or equipment without supporting documentation.
A certification field is generalized to a product category. The VDE and ENEC references in this article come only from the cited product records. Procurement must still check the proposed model, construction, cable, and document scope.
Put these seven inputs in the RFQ
- Destination market and equipment use case: where the equipment will be sold or used and in what project or operating scenario.
- Complete connection and protected item: wall end, equipment end, mating components, and the item expected to carry the IP statement.
- Actual exposure: source, direction, duration, and frequency of water, dust, moisture, or cleaning.
- Installation and mating state: orientation, nearby enclosure, drainage, and whether the connection is mated during operation and service.
- Cable requirements: conductor and jacket requirements, overall length, color, routing, restraint, and environmental conditions.
- Proposed model: product drawing, designated mating component, sample, or other material used to confirm the construction.
- Certification and project documents: which model and construction each requested document covers and the applicable scope.
These seven inputs turn “IP44 waterproof cord” into an RFQ that procurement, engineering, and the supplier can review line by line.
